Sony’s brand-new horror film,The Invitation, finished the final theatrical weekend of August atop the domestic box with a less than impressive $7 million performance to conclude its three-day opening. The weekend was undeniably one of the worst the summer has had to offer this year, with all shown titles collectively generating a dismal $54 million total.
PerDeadline,The Invitationpremiered this past Friday and took home a disappointing $2.6 million to conclude its long-awaited opening night. The film’s performance faired no better on Saturday and Sunday, which saw the brand-new film accumulate $4.35 million across both days. As stated, theSonyfilm took home $7 million overall to end the weekend, which would barely be good enough to enter the top ten during modest theatrical weekends.

The Invitationcenters around Nathalie Emmanuel, who ventures to the English countryside after the unexpected passing of her mother in search of other possible relatives. While in the countryside,The Fast and Furiousfranchisestar is invited to attend an incredibly lavish wedding to meet the newly found members of her cryptic family, but quickly discovers she has been immersed in a villainous conspiracy, which she may not survive. Alongside Emmanuel, the brand-new Sony horror film stars Thomas Doherty, Stephanie Corneliussen, Alana Boden, and Sean Pertwee.
The Invitationwas one of three new releases to premiere this weekend, but its appeal to audiences did not appear to be enough to fill empty seats. George Miller’s new filmThree Thousand Years Of Longing,starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, finished seventh at the box office after earning a disappointing $2.876 million. The brand-new John Boyega-led filmBreakingultimately failed to crack the top ten and finished the weekend in thirteenth place after making $1.022 million.
The box office numbers will continue to be relatively low this weekend, but the re-release of Marvel Studios’Spider-Man: No Way Homemay spark excitement in a rather lifeless assortment of new titles. In the coming weeks, audiences will be able to enjoy some intriguing titles, such asBarbarian,The Woman King,Olivia Wilde’sDon’t Worry Darling, andPearl, but it is unclear whether the appeal will be enough to fill seats in theaters. Only time will tell how audiences will respond to the arrival of each project while many patiently await the arrival ofBlack AdamandBlack Panther: Wakanda Foreverlater this year.
