With HBO’s television adaptation proving successful and the game coming to PC for the first time, more people than ever are now experiencingThe Last of Us Part 1for the very first time. Though the originalLast of Ustitle was released on the PS3 in 2013, Naughty Dog remade the game from the ground-up in 2022 for the PS5, significantly improving the graphics and overhauling gameplay and combat, making this a new experience even for veteran players.

The Last of Us Part 1may be a zombie apocalypse title, but the game’s prologue takes players through the initial outbreak through the eyes of Joel’s daughter, Sarah. The opening cutscene showsSarah lovingly giving Joel a fixed watchfor his birthday before later falling asleep. Joel takes her to bed, and then sometime later, she receives a disturbing call from Joel’s brother Tommy, setting the game’s events in motion.
Joel’s Home
After Sarah gets astrange call from Tommy, she’ll get up in search of Joel, allowing the player to take control of her. While players simply have to make it to Joel’s room, there are several missable interactions along the way. First, at the dresser at the opposite end of Sarah’s bed, players will find a card she meant to give to Joel.
After exiting her bedroom, the bathroom will be straight ahead. Go inside, and players will find a newspaper that hints at the outbreak.
Outside in the hallway, a light from the television will be visible through a doorway. This is Joel’s room. Go inside, and Sarah will watch the news broadcast. A couple of explosions end the broadcast and startle Sarah.
Afterward, go back into the hallway and head down the stairs. Proceed towards the kitchen, and Joel’s phone will be buzzing on the counter. Sarah can pick up the phone, showing several missed calls and texts from Tommy.
Afterward, turn around and head towards the two doors leading toward the office.
At this point, Joel will return, and he’ll calm Sarah down before leading her outside and into Tommy’s truck.
The City
Just as Tommy arrives, Joel puts Sarah in the back of the truck, and the three begin driving. The player continues to control Sarah and can look around and the passing surroundings. There’s no real objective in this section other than to sit back and watch, however.
Eventually, a car slams into Tommy’s truck, crashing them. Joel eventually wakes up, and players have to press thesquarebutton three times when prompted to break the windshield to escape.
The crash injured Sarah’s leg, so Sarah can no longer run. Joel will pick up Sarah, and at this point, players will take control of Joel for the first time. First, follow the crowd and run towards the gas station.
Eventually, a few cars crash into the gas station, causing it to explode. Follow Tommy and turn right, leading players to the movie theater up ahead.
Before reaching the theater, it’ll explode, forcing Joel to find a new path. Turn left and follow Tommy through the alleyway.
Run down the alleyway, and eventually, an infected will run up to Joel. Press thesquare button repeatedlyto hold him off before Tommy kicks it over and kills it.

At this point, Tommy will lead the way for a while, so follow Tommy through the alley. Eventually, they’ll head inside a restaurant. Tommy will stay behind to hold off the infected, leaving Joel to solely keep Sarah safe. Outside the restaurant, run toward the opening in the brick wall, illuminated by a light.
Run down the hill towards a red light in the distance. As players come closer, this light will be from a crashed ambulance. Continue running up the hill past it; several infected will be running right behind Joel, but for now, just focus on outrunning them.
Once players reach the top of the hill,the final cutscene of the prologue will play out, leading players into the next chapter, The Quarantine Zone.
