Summary

Ghost of Tsushimaplaces the player in the shoes of Jin Sakai as he develops his own code of honor fighting against the Mongol invaders who have put his homeland in peril. Despite only allowing players to control Jin, the game is occupied by a memorable cast of side characters, each with their own unique talents and lessons to offer him. This bears a resemblance to the cast ofThe Last of Uswhere gamers only ever control a small handful of characters despite being surrounded by others who are just as capable. Recently,TLoU2Remasteredintroduced “No Return,” which lets fans take control of the extended cast, andGhost of Tsushimacould benefit from offering something similar.

The Last of Us 2 Remasterednew roguelike mode “No Return” places the player in different environments from the game’s story and tasks them with surviving for as long as they can. In this mode, players can choose from various characters, including many who have never been playable before. Each of these characters has unique abilities that set them apart from one another. For example, Jesse gets a currency bonus, allowing him more freedom in purchasing things at trading posts. The wide variety of characters in “No Return” makes runs more unique and engaging while also letting players step into many of their shoes for the first time.

Ghost Of Tsushima’s Characters are Perfect For a Roguelike

LikeThe Last of Us,Ghost of Tsushimais a great candidate for a roguelike, as the game features a substantial variety of enemies and potential bosses.Ghost of Tsushima: Legendsmultiplayerhas a survival mode that tasks players with taking on waves of enemies inspired by Japanese folklore as well. A roguelike mode in aGhost of Tsushimasequel could pull from both reality and more fantastical elements of Japanese mythology likeLegendsdoes. Also of note is that whileGhost of Tsushima: Legendsfeatures four classes, players cannot control the main game’s extended cast of characters, which is truly a missed opportunity.

Ghost Of Tsushima Has Many Characters That Are Just as Capable as Jin

AGhost of Tsushimaroguelike mode could allow players to take control of Jin as well as his comrades and enemies. Jin’s uncle is the one who taught him how to use a sword growing up, and during the game Ishikawa teaches him archery, and Yuna teaches him to fight stealthily. Because so many of Jin’s allies are more proficient than him in certain areas, their playstyles and unique abilities would be fairly intuitive. The highly rumoredGhost of Tsushimasequelwould likely feature more memorable characters with unique skills to pull from as well. Like the playable characters inTLoU2Remastered’s “No Return”, the wide variety of characters inGhost of Tsushimawould make each run a unique experience.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Should Feature a Roguelike Mode

TheGhost of Tsushimasequel should feature a roguelike mode. It could even be attached to a hypotheticalGhost of Tsushima: Legends2, allowing fans of the game to take on the mode with friends. A roguelike mode in the sequel could ideally pull from both game’s casts of heroes and villains, unlike “No Return.” Including the more fantastical elements inLegendswould allow for a greater variety of enemies and playable heroes alike.Ghost of Tsushima’s charactersdeserve a greater spotlight beyond Jin, and a spin-off mode would be the perfect place to give them more attention outside the main story.

The Last of Us 2Remastered’s “No Return” mode is the perfect template for a similar mode inGhost of Tsushima 2. It isn’t hard to imagine what the different character’s abilities would be, andLegendsshows that there is potential for a multiplayer version as well. “No Return” let some ofTloU2’s extended cast receive more time in the spotlight, and many games, includingGhost of Tsushima, would benefit from doing the same. A roguelike mode would be a great addition to the game’s heavily rumored sequel, but for now, fans can look forward to theGhost of Tsushimamovie, which is reportedly coming along well.
