There have been a lot of attempts to turn theResident Evilgames into live-action phenomena. The very first came in 2002 with a movie that went on to spawn a huge franchise. Last year there was another attempt at a movie,Welcome to Raccoon City, which tried to reset things and follow the story of the games a little closer.

Both spinoffs did their own thing and didn’t purely follow the established lore ofResident Evil. This newNetflixshow flings things into the far-off future but decides to keep the background of the games as canon. That sounds good on paper but it also brings a lot of questions to mind, most notably, as to whether it is really canon.

8Why Wasn’t Jade Given A Partner?

Netflix’sResident Evilopens up with Jade in the field, researchinga group of zombiesin London. She calls her husband which reveals that Jade has been in London for six months. That’s a long time for one researcher to be looking after a bunch of zombies when she could be collecting other data for the University.

There are two stranger things about this setup, however. One, she wasn’t given a partner which seems like poor planning. Two, she doesn’t carry a weapon for emergencies which also seems like poor planning given the whole zombie apocalypse.

7Why Name It New Raccoon City?

Why did Umbrella name the new settlementNew Raccoon Citywhen that could reflect poorly on the organization’s past? Also, why is everything so conformity white? It’s not like townhouses in modern society ever get that white as it is too strikingly clean.

It’s like everyone living in New Raccoon City is part of a cult, which might actually be the point. If Umbrella is so meticulous about the housing designs then why aren’t the kids also made to wear uniforms? There are a lot of suspicious things about Umbrella’s set up in the 2022 timeline.

6Umbrella’s Facilities Are Unguarded

There’s another glaring hole in Umbrella’s design of this new utopia. The organization’s building is one big security disaster waiting to happen. One, the doors are made out of glass, making it easy for people to break in. It’s even easier to break into the Umbrella headquarters because there are no guards on duty.

This is seemingly a billion-dollar company with very sensitive materials hidden away inside its headquarters. The girls easily bypass security meaning that the AI controlling everything is not that smart. Umbrella’s poor planning leads tothe zombie apocalypse, presumably because Billie got bit.

5Evelyn’s Obsession With Joy

Why is Evelyn so obsessed with getting Joy out to market? It’s never explained other than she is a wild CEO that wantsthe Umbrella corporationto thrive under her reign. Part of the reason seems to be that she feels like the company was stolen from her father. She also talks about wanting to cure the world of depression and anxiety.

There might be something in season two that explains why she feels this way. Right now, however, she is just the epitome of evil. It’s in a cartoonish way that doesn’t make sense since she sees the bad trials going on. Is the world worth a couple of billion dollars?

4Jade’s Obsession With The Infected

Evelyn is not the only character in Netflix’sResident Evilwith an obsession. Jade wants to curethe zombie plagueor she wants to live in harmony with them. Early on she says there are about four billion infected in the world with only about 300 million humans left. Jade says humanity needs to cope with the infected rather than fight them but that doesn’t make sense.

In this same logic, why doesn’t Umbrella fight back to win over some goodwill with the people? Billie has control of drones which are perfect for air strikes. Couldn’t a bunch of air raids get rid of the infected for good? Why would Jade want to instead wait for a cure? Her ideas are a bit wishy-washy, making it hard to connect.

3Jade Bringing In That Zombie

Jade makes some bad choices in the show but the worst thing she ever did was let that zombie aboard The University. Why couldn’t she wait until morning? If she wanted to researcha zombie corpsethat badly, she could have at least told a guard she trusted in case things went south.

There was no need to rush this process. Her hasty decision caused her pregnant friend to die. Jade should have been banished from The University at the very least, which may yet happen in season two. If she doesn’t get thrown overboard, it’ll be a miracle.

2Why Did Jade Believe Billie In The Present?

Another bad decision Jade made was trusting Billie in the prison. From the first episode, Umbrella was aggressive in capturing Jade at any cost. Did she think all of that was for Billie to say she was dying? That is too unbelievable for words.

Jade makes some sketchy decisions in Netflix’sResident Evilseries but to fall for that trap is like a whole other level of buffoonery. Admittedly, removing the chip in Jade’s arm was a good fakeout but Jade should still have been more suspicious.

1Covid Happened?

After Billie gets bit by the dog and her father, Wesker, is treating her, he says she needs to stay home for a few days. Billie asks about quarantining like Covid which means, somehow, Covid did indeed happen in theResident Eviluniverse which is pretty wild to think about. This brings up a lot of questions for the universe ofResident Evil.

Was Umbrella behind the pathogen? Did Umbrella cure the pathogen and thus create some goodwill for their evil company? That one word threw too much chaos into this already convoluted series of monsters, clones, tall vampire ladiesthat stoke the flames of the internet, and so on.
