Top Gun: Maverickis soaring high at the domestic box office two months after its release. The film that continued the journey of Tom Cruise’s Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell over three decades after the original film was released is now the seventh-biggest film at the domestic box office after it has earned over $662 million in ticket sales, overtaking James Cameron’sTitanic.
Since its release,Top Gun: Maverickhas received rave reviews from both fans and critics, and it has seen skyrocketing ticket sales. Its journey began with arecord-breaking Memorial Day Weekend, with the film earning $156 million domestically in its first four days of release. With growing demand due to word-of-mouth and repeat customers, it isn’t surprising that the film has managed to break more records since its release. It remains to be seen how much further it will climb in the top 10 list.

Apart from securing the seventh spot on the domestic box office list,Top Gun: Maverickis now the highest-grossing filmin Paramount Pictures' 110-year history. What’s interesting is that Cruise’s latest flick has earned a similar amount internationally, as it did in the domestic market, earning $690 million since its release, making its global figures hit $1.3 billion. Keep in mind that the film did not play in China and Russia, some of the biggest markets in the world.

The Marvel Studios' hit has a box office earning of $678 million, leaving Cruise’s record-breaking film just $16 million behind. The film that currently rules the list isStar Wars: The Force Awakenswith $936 million, and the remaining top five spots are taken byAvengers: Endgamewith $858.3 million, followed bySpider-Man: No Way Homewith $804.7 million,Avatarwith $760 million, andBlack Pantherwith $700 million.
Top Gun: Maverickis Cruise’s first film to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend, and also his first project to reach $1 billion at the global box office. It’s obviously a special movie for the actor, not only because it is breaking records since it premiered in theaters, but also because it brings back one of his most popular characters. TheoriginalTop Gunmoviewas released in 1986 and was the highest-grossing film of that year. Over the past three decades, the film has formed a cult following of sorts and saw an IMAX re-release in 2013 followed by another massive re-release in theaters in 2021.
